Tim Walz: A Contender for Harris' Running Mate

Early Life and Political Background

Timothy James Walz (born April 6, 1964) is an American politician and former U.S. Democratic congressional candidate. Born in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Walz served in the Minnesota National Guard for 24 years, including tours of duty in Afghanistan and Kuwait. After retiring from military service, Walz entered politics in 2006, winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the House for three terms before running for governor of Minnesota in 2018. Walz defeated incumbent Republican governor Jeff Johnson in the election, becoming the state's 41st governor.

Political Beliefs and Stances

Walz is a self-described "pragmatic Democrat," and his policy positions generally align with the mainstream of the Democratic Party. He supports affordable healthcare, climate action, and gun safety measures. Walz has also been outspoken in his criticism of President Donald Trump.

Contender for Harris' Running Mate

In 2020, Walz was considered a potential running mate for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Harris reportedly narrowed her search for a running mate to two finalists: U.S. Senator Kamala Harris of California and Walz. Walz's folksy appeal and experience as a governor were seen as strengths in his candidacy for vice president. However, Harris ultimately selected California Senator Kamala Harris as her running mate.
