Open Championship Prize Money

The Open Championship Purse Soars to £17 Million

A Historic Increase for the Prestigious Major

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) has announced that the total prize fund for the 2024 Open Championship will be £17 million, a significant increase from the £16.5 million purse in 2023. This marks a continuation of the R&A's commitment to enhancing the stature and financial rewards of the world's oldest golf major.

The Open Championship, often referred to as the "home of golf," has a long and storied history dating back to 1860. It is one of the four men's major golf championships, alongside the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. Despite its prestigious status, the Open Championship has traditionally had a lower prize fund compared to the other majors.

In recent years, the R&A has made a concerted effort to increase the prize money for the Open Championship, recognizing the importance of financial incentives in attracting and showcasing the world's best golfers. In 2023, the purse was increased by 18% to £16.5 million, and the 2024 purse represents a further 3% increase.

The winner of the 2024 Open Championship will receive a record-breaking £3.1 million, followed by £1.7 million for the runner-up and £1.2 million for third place. The increased prize money is expected to attract a strong field of contenders and provide even greater motivation for players to perform at their best.
