House Votes To Censure Rashida Tlaib

US Congress Censures Palestinian-American Lawmaker

House Votes to Censure Rashida Tlaib

Paragraph 1

The US Congress has voted to censure its only Palestinian-American member, Rashida Tlaib, over comments she made on the Israel-Gaza war. The House voted 234-188 to censure Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan, for her remarks related to Israel and Palestinians. This is the first time the House has censured a member since 2010.

Paragraph 2

The resolution to censure Tlaib was introduced by Republican Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri. Wagner said that Tlaib's comments were "anti-Semitic" and "hateful." Tlaib has denied that her comments were anti-Semitic, and she has said that she was simply speaking out against the Israeli government's treatment of Palestinians.

Paragraph 3

The vote to censure Tlaib was largely along party lines, with all but one Republican voting in favor of the resolution and all but one Democrat voting against it. The resolution was also supported by Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota who is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. Omar said that Tlaib's comments were "protected speech" and that the resolution to censure her was "a political stunt."
